Orientiert hat er sich dafür, sagt er, an Größen zwischen Bruce Springsteen, The National, den frühen The Killers sowie einigen Wavepop-Größen der Achtzigerjahre. Mehr denn je hat er sich dafür eines Instrumentes bedient, das für viele andere die Grundlage von allem ist, bei ihm auf den ersten beiden Alben aber überhaupt nicht auftauchte, danach erst peu à peu Einzug in seinen Klang hielt und auf dieser Platte nun zum ersten Mal oft das kompositorische Geschehen dominiert: die Gitarre. Die raumgreifende Weite des Klangs steht zeitweise in einem herrlichen Kontrast zu den verhandelten Themen - sie lenkt dabei aber nicht ab, sondern macht den Inhalt nur umso konturschärfer.
