These wines are blends, with Encruzado as the lead grape in the blend, and Malvasia Fina, Cerceal, Bical and Verdelho rounding out the remainder of the grapes.Encruzado has been grown in the Dão for many years, first documented in 1865. Fast forward over a hundred years, and in the 1990's Encruzado started to become fashionable, with several producers making a single variety version. Part of the reason for the increased interest is that Encruzado can offer medium body, but also keeps its freshness. It is a grape that many in the region liken texturally to Chardonnay from Burgundy. Many producers experimenting with Encruzado also noticed its ability to age. With the wine open knit early in its life, shutting down for a period of 3 to 5 years, before it reemerges with beautiful secondary aromas and flavors.
In 2018 Carlos and José decided to produce a mono varietal white wine from 100% Encruzado. Made from grapes grown on the hillsides of Darei, the very best Encruzado grapes were selected, fermented in concrete tanks, and rested on their fine lees for several month
The 2018 Encruzado is a stunning white wine. With notes of flowers, citrus peel and mineral emerging from the nose. Medium weight, this is a texturally beautiful wine that just glides across the palate. One can find hints at peach, mandarin orange, resin, and mineral notes on the long, tactile finish.
This pairs beautifully with traditional salt cod dishes, but can also work with sushi, and even white meats such as pork.
