Approaching the Bible in an original way--comparing biblical heroes to heroes in world literature--Elliott Rabin addresses a core biblical question: What is the Bible telling us about what it means to be a hero? Focusing on the lives of six major biblical characters--Moses, Samson, David, Esther, Abraham, and Jacob--Rabin examines their resemblance to hero types found in (and perhaps drawn from) other literatures and analyzes why the Bible depicts its heroes less gloriously than do the texts of other cultures: * Moses founds the nation of Israel--and is short-tempered and weak-armed.* Samson, arrogant and unhinged, can kill a thousand enemies with his bare hands.
* David establishes a centralized, unified, triumphal government--through pretense and self-deception.
* Esther saves her people but marries a murderous, misogynist king.
* Abraham's relationships are wracked with tension.
* Jacob fathers twelve tribes--and wins his inheritance through deceit. In the end, is God the real hero? Or is God too removed from human constraints to even be called a "hero"? Ultimately, Rabin excavates how the Bible's unique perspective on heroism can address our own deep-seated need for human-scale heroes.

Good gift but particular gift for this difficult person to shop for
Format: Paperback
Got this as a gift for a friend and he was hard to shop for even after asking his wife. He's not a handyman, or a tech savvy man. He cooks, and is a well read man with interests in politics and psychology, he's not at all a gamer either. He doesnt DO much but work, it's not like he works out, golf's or anything like that... And they have a Brady bunch family and all she gave me to go on was he likes malcol x. And this author is more Malcom x than mlk and aggressive in views (when being compared to MLK) but is also very intertwined with their philosophies as he was IN it... According to the person I gave the gift to. Basically he loved it! So

Great Book.
Format: Mass Market Paperback
Its great to be able to go back and read Stokely Carmichael today in his own words. This book provides an excellent overview of what black power means and how the concept originated. Although the book seems a bit dated today, many of the ideas presented are still entirely relevant.
Ive only given the book four stars due to its age. Many of the statistics presented are dated, and undoubtedly there are other texts available today that present these ideas in a much better/newer way. But if you are interested in Stokely Carmichael and what he stood for, this is the book to read.
