Handmade rough pottery from Jingdezhen — kiln-changed mineral glaze
A chawan is the wide, deep bowl used in Japanese tea ceremony for whisking matcha. This one is handmade from rough pottery (粗陶) in Jingdezhen, China's historic ceramics capital, and fired at 1300–1350°C in a combination of wood and gas kilns. The high-temperature firing creates what's called a kiln-changed glaze, where each bowl develops its own colour pattern during the firing process. No two are exactly alike.
Pick it up and you'll notice straight away: at around 800g, this bowl has real weight to it. The rough pottery surface has a warm, textured feel under your fingers, and the curved shape sits naturally when you cup it with both hands. There's something grounding about holding a heavy, handmade bowl of matcha with both palms. It slows you down a little, which is kind of the whole point.
Product details
- Material: Rough pottery (粗陶) with natural mineral kiln-changed glaze
- Diameter: Approx. 11cm
- Height: Approx. 7.3cm
- Capacity: Approx. 300ml
- Weight: Approx. 800g
- Firing: 1300–1350°C, wood-fired and gas kiln
- Colours: Black, Dark Green, Light Green (Celadon), Kiln-Changed Blue, White
A note on texture: The Black bowl has an unglazed exterior, so the outside feels noticeably rough and grainy under your hands. The other four colours (Dark Green, Light Green, Kiln-Changed Blue, White) are glazed on the outside, giving them a smoother finish. All five share the same raw clay interior. If you like that tactile, earthy feel when you hold the bowl, the Black is the one to go for.
Each bowl is shaped by hand, so expect slight variations in size and form. The rim has a natural, uneven edge. That's part of the handmade character, not a defect. The unglazed foot ring shows the raw clay beneath.
This works well for
- Whisking matcha (both thin usucha and thick koicha)
- Matcha lattes and cold-brew matcha
- Anyone who enjoys the ritual of preparing matcha by hand
- A gift for someone getting into matcha at home
Handmade note: Because each piece goes through the kiln-change process, the glaze colour and pattern on your bowl will differ from product photos. This is normal for kiln-changed pottery, and it's what makes each piece one of a kind.
Care instructions
Hand wash with warm water only. Avoid soap or detergent. The porous rough pottery will absorb it and affect the taste of your matcha. Let the bowl air dry completely before storing. Over time, the glaze will develop a natural patina from use, which is considered a desirable quality in traditional tea culture.
