This is Amateur Childbirth's "Christian Rock" album. The previous LP from Ivan Matthew Hick's solo project, 2013's Pripyat, concerned itself with the blighted belief systems of UFO worshippers. Your Afterlife Is Cancelled expands this compelling solo project's field of enquiry to look at a wider array of "religious anomalies": cults, for want of a better word. Each song is about a different such anomaly. To call Hicks's vision apocalyptic would be to underplay it's cruelty. The Bible's rampant sadism pales in comparison. This is a world where faith - in a god or gods, in astrology, morality, or any meaning whatsoever - is merely a prelude to punishment. His lyrics are vivid glossaries of pain, abjection and indignity; the songs' protagonists swim in blood, piss, shit, and ejaculate. Eschatology and scatology are indivisible here. Drugs are rampantly abused, albeit to little benefit. There are scalpel-flashes of humor in David's wordplay, rhyming and dour Brisbane diction - but this offers scant consolation for the songs' embattled subjects, who wait, in vein, for salvation, while crows peck out their eyes, blood pours from their ears, and psoriasis ravages their skin. These words, for all their pessimism and body-horror, are cradled in minimalist, folk-rock arrangements that are quite dazzling in their beauty and grievously earned simplicity: Hicks's monochord strum embellished with subtle violin, synthesizer, and percussion shading. Amateur Childbirth's caustic end-times worldview inevitably prompts comparisons with Current 93, but also a wider (non-)tradition of caustic and disturbed loner psych that includes Simon Finn, Patrik Fitzgerald, Robyn Hitchcock, Peter Jefferies, and Roy Harper. Your Afterlife Is Cancelled is a depressive tour de force from one of the most crushingly eloquent voices in the Australian underground.

Read This In One Sitting…..
Format: Hardcover
Not pregnant yet, but this book was the perfect balance of information and real-life story. It was so relatable and reassuring—I suddenly didn’t feel crazy for all the hours of baby research I’ve been doing. I never felt pressured, just encouraged and entertained while learning so much. Such a refreshing read, you won’t regret getting this one!

Great Buy for First-Time-Mama's
Format: Hardcover
This is my first pregnancy, and I'm very happy I purchased this book. Meghan Trainor will make you laugh and she gets very real with you—it was almost as if I was hanging out with an old friend when I sat down to read. It's a mix of a memoir, a diary, and advice from experts including her personal trainer and her OB/GYN—including exercises by trimester and recipes. She also recommends some products without being sales-y.
If you're a first-time-mom (or even if you're not), this is a great buy that's not like other pregnancy books (those can sometimes be information overload in my opinion). This would also be a great gift for a newly pregnant friend. You don't have to be a Meghan Trainor fan to enjoy this book.
Book Highlights/Helpful Thoughts
- One of my favorite phrases was "influencers are great, but they make pregnancy and labor an aesthetic, and girl, pregnancy is not an aesthetic, it's rough!"
- Meghan wanted to give birth vaginally, but due to complications, she had to have a schedule C-Section and she talks about that experience extensively is a way that was helpful. I'm personally doing everything I can to have a natural vaginal birth, but life sometimes has other plans. It was helpful reading her take instead of reading the Reddit horror stories. I now know what to expect in a non-traumatizing way if I were to need a C-section.
- Meghan was pregnant during the height of the Covid Pandemic in 2020—so her experiences are based on that. I say this, because she talks a lot about how her husband could not join in at any of her ultrasound appointments and her labor team was limited due to the restrictions. Thankfully appointments are no longer like that.
