NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE

In 2009, scholars at Yale University came across a startling manuscript: the memoir of Austin Reed, a free black man born in the 1820s who spent most of his early life ricocheting between forced labor in prison and forced labor as an indentured servant. Lost for more than one hundred and fifty years, the handwritten document is the first known prison memoir written by an African American. Corroborated by prison records and other documentary sources, Reed's text gives a gripping first-person account of an antebellum Northern life lived outside slavery that nonetheless bore, in its day-to-day details, unsettling resemblances to that very institution.

Now, for the first time, we can hear Austin Reed's story as he meant to tell it. He was born to a middle-class black family in the boomtown of Rochester, New York, but when his father died, his mother struggled to make ends meet. Still a child, Reed was placed as an indentured servant to a nearby family of white farmers near Rochester. He was caught attempting to set fire to a building and sentenced to ten years at Manhattan's brutal House of Refuge, an early juvenile reformatory that would soon become known for beatings and forced labor.

Seven years later, Reed found himself at New York's infamous Auburn State Prison. It was there that he finished writing this memoir, which explores America's first reformatory and first industrial prison from an inmate's point of view, recalling the great cruelties and kindnesses he experienced in those places and excavating patterns of racial segregation, exploitation, and bondage that extended beyond the boundaries of the slaveholding South, into free New York.

Accompanied by fascinating historical documents (including a series of poignant letters written by Reed near the end of his life), The Life and the Adventures of a Haunted Convict is a work of uncommon beauty that tells a story of nineteenth-century racism, violence, labor, and captivity in a proud, defiant voice. Reed's memoir illuminates his own life and times--as well as ours today.

I think it's large for a clutch,but it's beautiful!
Color: Natural
I ordered this purse because I just love how different and fun it is. I thought it would be great for a sunny vacation. The first thing I noticed when it arrived was that it's much bigger than I thought it would be. The size is mostly in the raffia design. The purse itself is clutch-size, able to hold your phone, credit cards, and some lip gloss. Due to the size of the whole purse, I think it could use an optional strap. The quality and the craftsmanship are top-notch, however. The raffia is amazing, and the colors are very similar to a grass skirt, making it perfect for a tropical vacation or Polynesian-themed get-together.

Taco Purse
Color: Spicy
This might be the silliest bag my wife and I own, but it's definitely unique. I call it "the taco bag," and that's 100000% what it looks like to me. It's a clutch so it's not practical for every day use if you want to keep your hands free, but it has a fun, summery vibe that makes me think my wife would look great in a sundress at a pool party carrying this. Maybe. I honestly am not sure what kind of outfit this bag goes with, but it is exactly as pictured and it feels very well made, which I have come to expect from Sam Edelman. We have several bags by them and they are all lovely, this is the weirdest one and the hardest to figure out where we're going to use it, but I'm not mad I have it and if you like the taco look it lives up to it in person.

Stylish Clutch That Adds a Nice Pop of Color
Color: Spicy
This clutch is such a pretty accessory and the Spicy color really stands out in the best way. It adds a nice pop to an outfit without being too loud, and the shade works well across different seasons. The size is practical for carrying the essentials like a phone, cards, keys, and a lipstick without feeling bulky. I like that it looks polished enough for a dressier event but can still work for a casual dinner out. The material and hardware feel well made, and it has that classic Sam Edelman look that feels put together. It fits comfortably in hand and is easy to carry through the evening. The design is simple but elevated, which makes it versatile. Overall, this is a stylish handbag that feels both useful and attractive.
