Stinging nettle has a lectin known as Urtica Dioica Agglutinin (UDA). UDA has properties that make it a formidable immune modulator. UDA is known in immunology as a super-antigen. It induces specific white blood cells to multiply and activates CD8+ T cells (often called cytotoxic T lymphocytes), which are very important for our immune defence against intracellular pathogens, including viruses and bacteria.
UDA has in fact been tested against the Corona SARS virus. Its mechanism of action involves inhibition of the replication of live SARS-CoV by targeting early stages of the replication cycle. Namely, adsorption and/or penetration. This neutralises the virus presumably by binding to the SARS-CoV spike (S) glycoprotein and preventing virus attachment to cells by binding to Nacetylglucosamine like residues present on the glycosylated envelope glycoproteins of the virus.
Stinging nettle along with olive leaf extract makes a very potent combination. The latter is proven to have strong anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and anti-bacterial behaviour.
