Since 1985, Medecins Sans Frontieres, a national humanitarian organization, has been offering HIV/AIDS care for the most vulnerable people, those shunned by society and desperate through poverty in the slums and prisons of Lima, Peru. In a celebration of MSF's work and the people whose existence they have salvaged, Magnum photographer Larry Towell brings us a dynamic and stirring series of images.

Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) is an international humanitarian organization, committed to providing medical assistance to populations in danger and to raising awareness of the plight of the people they help. Today MSF is active in more than 60 countries in the world. MSF has been working in Peru since 1985. In Peru, the prevalence of HIV/AIDS is low, but highest amongst the most neglected members of society there, mainly homosexual sex between men and commercial sex workers. Since 2004, MSF has offered HIV/AIDS care in the slum of Villa El Salvador, Lima.

In Lima, MSF has been working in Lurigancho, one of the most populated prisons of Latin America. In this prison the risk of contracting HIV/AIDS is 5 to 7 times higher than in the rest of the country. At the end of 2007 MSF handed over all Peruvian projects to local authorities, leaving the country after almost 25 years.

Larry Towell (Magnum Photos) was commissioned by MSF to travel to the prison and the slums in Lima to photograph the result of MSF's 25-year presence, and show that the area is now ready to continue its fight against HIV and AIDS on its own. Most of these pictures were taken in the week and a half culminating on International AIDS Day, 2007.

Towell brings us black and white images of people shunned by society and desperate through poverty, their situation exacerbated through the endemic HIV and AIDS in their already marginalised population. MSF has targeted their cause specifically since the mid 1990s.

Just Spectacular
Format: Kindle
I just read seven issues in one sitting and turned to my husband and told him I was sad because I just read an amazing new comic but I finished it and now I have to wait for more. This story is hard to explain, or stick in any particular comic niche. There's hitmen, vampires, ghosts, teenagers performing Sweeney Todd as their school play, apocalyptic dilemmas, addiction, redemption and a talking mole. Just wow. The art is really crisp, colorful and clean. If you liked Middlewest, I think you'll love this. Looking forward to more from these creators.

Great characters, great art, too many loose ends
Format: Paperback
I want to love it; it has great art and realistic characters in a interesting setting, but even by the end of the first volume I was left with nothing but questions. I feel like nothing ever got explained and it took away from the quality of the comic. I'm sure if I continue reading I will get the answers I want, but it feels like the pacing of the story is just a little off. Still a stellar comic.

Can't get past the art
Format: Hardcover
I bought this book blind, knowing nothing about the creators and with no expectations. While I thought the story was interesting and generally well-executed, sometimes the intrusion of the writer's thoughts, the attempts to break the fourth wall, and the wink-wink, nudge-nudge gags at the fans grow tiresome. But the writing is the strength compared to the art, which in my opinion is poor at best. The artist lacks anatomical skills, perspective skills -- the art almost never fills the frame. The splash pages are underwhelming because the figures are so small. Even the parts of the story that are supposed to be "cartoony" (the 5th dimension), which might better fit this artist's abilities, don't work. I really feel this could have been a significantly better product with a different artist.
