A New Perspective is a 1964 album by jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd, released on Blue Note Records. Blending jazz with spiritual influences, the album is distinguished by its use of a vocal choir singing wordless harmonies alongside the instrumental arrangements.
Byrd described the project as a “modern hymnal,” drawing a parallel to early New Orleans jazz musicians who infused religious music with their own stylistic innovations. “I mean this album seriously,” he explained. “We’re approaching this tradition with respect and great pleasure.”
The album remains one of Byrd’s most distinctive works, earning a place on Pitchfork’s 2017 list of The 200 Best Albums of the 1960s, where it ranked No. 194.
