If you’ve lived in Melbourne within the last decade, you’ll no doubt be familiar with the term ‘doll-wave’. Used pejoratively by some and affectionately by others, the sardonic label described a then-burgeoning wave of Aussie slackers obsessed with the disillusionment of modern youth. Tapping into the rich vein of laconic jangle-pop laid bare by the Triffids and The Go-Betweens, flagship doll-wave outfits—such as Dick Diver and The Twerps—funnelled their existential crisis into their music, writing songs about worthless university degrees, dwindling housing affordability, and the promise of an Australian dream perpetually out of reach. For young people of the time, doll-wave felt sincere, tangible and real; it was a shock, then, to witness it fizzle so quickly into obscurity. Today, if you mention doll-wave without tongue firmly in cheek, you’ll be met with a flurry of eye-rolls and sneers. Doll-wave, however, was no mere flash in the pan, manifesting in the sound of several modern acts: in the regional drawl of Courtney Barnett, the motorik pulse of Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever, and, most recently, the infectious charm of quaint Melbourne five-piece, Crepes.

Like Crepes’ impeccable debut, Channel FourIn Cahoots is singularly driven by frontman Tim Karmouche’s excellent song writing. You won’t find any instrumental heroics here—just tightly-wound grooves, which coil around the ever-laconic Karmouche’s avuncular melodies. This lean, utilitarian sound is informed by a decidedly new wave aesthetic: the one-two punch of ‘As You Go’ and ‘Dark Demons’ recall the glory days of Talking Heads, replete with stringent bass grooves, deft keyboard polyrhythms and a hefty pinch of irresistible kitsch. Lead single ‘Bicycle Man’, a vaguely psychedelic ode to two-wheeled transport, feels like a sly wink at Syd Barrett, while the cavernous riffs in ‘High Time’—sung by guitarist Sam Cooper—impute a hint of surf-rock flair to Crepes’ traditionally bare-bones aesthetic. These songs are carefully structured, precise: In Cahoots is, no doubt, a very lean cut.

Only when Crepes crack open their sound, however, is Karmouche truly allowed to shine. His yearning performance in ‘I Was A Kid’, a jangly slice of sepia-toned Australiana, absolutely shimmers with nostalgic melancholy: the buoyant chorus—‘I’ll put the sad times in my dusty old rear-view’, Karmouche sighs—cuts with the same emotive piquancy of a Wilco hit. ‘The World Ain’t Too Far Away’, a dream-like sequence of outback minutiae, evokes the same sense of reverie: the warmth of childhood memories, but also a distant sadness too; a faint longing for the simplicity, opportunity and promise of youth. It’s this feeling that defined doll-wave, that rendered it so attractive and relatable, and In Cahoots captures it in spades—and, thankfully, without a single reference to student allowance.- Thomas S.

New formula
Size: 1.6 Fl Oz (Pack of 1), Style: New and Improved Formula!
I love the original aqua cream but it seems they have changed the formula and it is a much thinner, more liquidy product. The scent has also changed, though it’s fairly neutral, and it now comes in a smaller glass container compared to the original plastic.

Obsessed. Soothing, effective, fragrance-free, incredibly healing
Style: Tolerance Daily Foaming Facial Cleanser
I’ve been loving this so much I bought a second bottle after a few days of using it. It has all the skin soothing benefits of the tolerance lotion cleanser, but it’s also a really great cleanser. It’s almost not noticeable how good it is at cleansing because your skin doesn’t feel stripped after, but it takes things off really quickly. I was worried because it doesn’t foam a lot and it feels so nurturing — much like the tolerance lotion cleanser (which I use as a second cleanse when my skin needs a few days to recover from something like a derm office treatment) — but when I wash again with my favorite HG cleanser nothing extra comes off, and I tested it twice on waterproof eyeliner that I’d swiped on my forearm for an hour or so, the eyeliner dissolved and wiped off with two or three gentle swipes. It has a very emollient texture, so when you rub it against your skin it slips so easily you don’t realize it’s dissolving and taking things away because there is no friction. So it’s great at taking off makeup, it’s AMAZING at cleaning makeup brushes, and IT DOES NOT BURN MY EYES AT ALL. Also, it is FRAGRANCE-FREE… before I bought it I read a review complaining about smelling a citrus fragrance, that person either has some sort of brain tumor or something spilled on their bottle when it was in a warehouse because this is definitely a fragrance-free product. Prior to trying this, I had tried another cleanser that gave me weird acne hives all over my chest (never happened to me before) and I was struggling to heal the acne and the irritation. I noticed an immediate difference when I started using the tolerance cleanser on it; the fresh redness went away, the acne started healing, and the post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation has been healing fast. So I’ve been using this on my body as well and it’s soothing and moisturizing in all the places where other things have been drying. I have mild rosacea and I hadn’t realized how irritated my skin was from the last thing I’d tried until after 5 days or so of using this my skin tone looked much more even and the stubborn PIH I have from a two-zit hormonal breakout a month ago finally looked dramatically lighter (as recently as the week before, I’d needed to cover them with high-coverage concealer). Because this doesn’t foam much, some people might not realize how well it’s cleaning… I encourage you to judge it based on how your skin looks and feels. Since it is very emollient though, I do think it’s important to use it with a face wash scrubber or washcloth just to ensure you’re getting some mild mechanical exfoliation and clearing away skin cells that could be trapping stuff in your pores. For this reason, I do wash my face with this twice so the first wash can get off makeup/debris/oil and then the second wash can really penetrate and clean my skin.
