"When I first started speaking to UCLH about a residency there were a number of departments that interested me as potential subject matter. It wasn’t until I found out I was pregnant and began attending appointments at the hospital as an expectant mother that I began to develop a particular interest in the areas I was visiting. Trips to the maternity wing for scans, blood tests, antenatal classes and then the birth itself were both a new experience emotionally for me, but also visually. At some point during this period I decided that the maternity wing would make the ideal subject for my work, bringing together my personal relationship to this hospital with an ongoing interest in depicting women’s working lives through painting.”

In February 2022 The Fitzrovia Chapel presented an exhibition of new large-scale paintings by artist Caroline Walker. They followed her recent residency with the maternity service in the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Wing at University College London Hospitals (UCLH). Caroline Walker is known for painting women at work and often behind the scenes, from hotel maids to her own mother. This new series of paintings saw her capture midwives, doctors, cleaners and mothers, and was inspired by a series of four paintings by Frederick Cayley Robinson the ‘Acts of Mercy’. These large paintings, measuring 200 x 340 cm each, originally hung in the foyer of the Middlesex Hospital, of which The Fitzrovia Chapel is now the only remaining building. After the Middlesex Hospital was closed in 2005 and shortly after demolished, the paintings were acquired by the Wellcome Collection nearby. This exhibition presented three large paintings at the exact same size as the Cayley Robinson’s within the chapel: ‘Theatre’, ‘Ultrasound’ and ‘Birthing Pool’. There were also two smaller paintings: ‘First Nappy Change’ and ‘Newborn Check.’

Alongside the exhibition at The Fitzrovia Chapel, UCLH displayed ink drawings and oil sketches from Caroline’s time at the hospital in their ground floor exhibition space, visible externally from Euston Road. These included the oil sketches of the large paintings on view at the chapel. The exhibition at UCLH ran from 18 February – 6 April, and was viewable by hospital staff and patients only in line with UCLH’s current visitor policy.

This catalogue features images of all works in both exhibitions, an interview with Caroline Walker and Guy Noble, arts curator at UCLH, and an essay by Hannah Watson, Chair of The Fitzrovia Chapel.

Our public events programme has been produced around the themes of the exhibition with a focus on pregnancy, birthing experiences and motherhood. The programme has been devised in collaboration with Liat&Co.

‘Birth Reflections’ is supported by Stephen Friedman Gallery. Caroline Walker is represented by Stephen Friedman Gallery, London, GRIMM, Amsterdam/New York and Ingleby Gallery, Edinburgh. Walker will present her first solo exhibition at Stephen Friedman Gallery from 29 April to 28 May 2022.

Its a hit for my 9lb chewer!
Style: Chilly Penguin, Size: Small (Pack of 1)
So far so good! My Pup is a chewer and destroys most of his toys. This has been great to keep him happy and occupied for about an hour. I work from home, so when I know I need to keep him busy this is perfect. Ill keep an eye on it to make sure he doesn't break it, but it is pretty solid and thick. He can get through a puzzle in seconds, so this has been so good for him. Ive done mostly broth and veggies, some kibble. Even yogurt and peanut butter. Right now he gets it twice a day. He spends about an hour with it and then hes so tired hes ready for a nap. Once around mid day and another late evening before bed. Im ordering another to keep for when I have to leave him home alone. He cleans it pretty well, but Ive found soaking in hot water also loosens any bits left behind. Because its small, I'm not worried about extra calories.

SMELLS MUSTY
Opened it up for our pup on his bday and it smelled like pure mold. We had to throw it out because it was just terrible smelling and we didn't want our pup to even put it in his mouth!

Battery so so
Each charge doesn’t last very long, but my dog likes it when it does.

WORTH IT!
My English Bulldog could chew through any toy even if it was advertised not to be destroyed. This was the only interactive toy that he was not able to destroy. YEA!
