OverviewThe Purple Ribbon Gorgonia (Pterogorgia anceps) is an elegant, hardy, photosynthetic gorgonian known for its flat, ribbon-like branches and striking deep purple to violet coloration. Each blade has sharp, angular edges and a distinctive “ribbon” shape that sways beautifully in the current. Small, tan or golden polyps extend along the edges, creating a soft, velvety appearance when open. This species is one of the easiest gorgonians to maintain, making it a fantastic choice for reef aquariums seeking movement, colour, and natural height.
OriginNative to the Caribbean Sea and Western Atlantic, including the Bahamas, Florida Keys, and Gulf of Mexico. Found in shallow reefs and lagoons exposed to moderate to strong current and bright light, often forming colonies in sandy or rocky substrates.
FeedingThe Purple Ribbon Gorgonia is photosynthetic, hosting symbiotic zooxanthellae that provide most of its nutritional needs through photosynthesis. Supplemental feeding is optional but enhances growth and polyp extension:
- Phytoplankton or microplankton (1–2 times per week)
- Marine snow or powdered coral foods
- Occasional trace element or amino acid supplements
Polyps capture small particulate foods from the water column, but regular feeding is not essential for survival.
LightingModerate to high lighting. This species thrives under strong, full-spectrum light from LED, T5, or metal halidesystems. PAR levels of 150–250 ¬µmol/m¬≤/s promote optimal colour and health. Place in a well-lit section of the aquarium to maintain its rich purple hue.
Water FlowModerate to strong, indirect flow. Continuous movement keeps polyps clean, encourages extension, and prevents detritus buildup. Avoid direct jets that may cause tissue erosion or prevent polyp opening.
Placement- Position in the mid to upper levels of the tank, ideally where light and flow are balanced.
- Secure upright in rockwork or on the substrate using epoxy or coral glue.
- Allow space around the coral — branches may grow upward and outward over time.
Peaceful and reef safe. Compatible with:
- All reef-safe fish (clownfish, gobies, tangs, blennies, etc.)
- Reef-safe invertebrates (shrimp, hermits, snails, starfish)
- Soft corals, LPS, and SPS species
Avoid:
- Angelfish and butterflyfish that may nip at polyps
- Aggressive stinging corals placed too closely (e.g., Euphyllia, Galaxea)
Peaceful.Pterogorgia anceps does not sting other corals but can release mild chemical compounds (allelopathy) in overcrowded systems. Provide good spacing and use activated carbon filtration in mixed reefs.
Experience LevelBeginner to intermediate. Hardy, adaptable, and forgiving, this is one of the most suitable gorgonians for reef aquarists. It tolerates a range of conditions and recovers quickly from fragging or minor damage.
Water Parameters- Temperature: 24–27°C (75–81°F)
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG
- Hardness (dKH): 8–12
- Calcium: 400–450 ppm
- Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm
- Nitrate: <10 ppm
- Tank Size: Minimum 50 gallons (190L) for stable conditions and good flow coverage
Regular water changes and strong protein skimming maintain water clarity and nutrient balance.
Reef CompatibilityFully reef safe. The Purple Ribbon Gorgonia complements mixed and soft coral reef systems beautifully. Its upright, ribbon-like branches add movement, height, and vivid purple tones, making it a stunning contrast against greens and oranges in reef displays.
