Ця книжка підсумовує багатолітню працю Віктора Дудка над студіями про 'Основу', які становлять головну й найзмістовнішу частину його наукового доробку. Перша стаття дослідника, – розвідка про основ’янського автора Митрофана Александровича, – з’явилася 1987 року, а остання, присвячена хронології випуску журналу, – 2013-го. Але Віктор і надалі плідно вивчав 'Основу', особливо в останній рік життя, готуючи до видання книжку.

Аналіз доробку науковця в ділянці вивчення 'Основи' – ще справа майбутнього. Щоби виконати таку роботу, вочевидь, треба бути 'в темі', почасти самому стати дослідником 'Основи' та її доби, і не принагідним (бо ж обсяг матеріялу неосяжний), а цілеспрямованим. Таких упродовж історії української науки завжди було обмаль. Що казати. Після Михайла ­Бернштейна, який занурився в основ’янську проблематику ще до німецько-совєтської війни і зумів зреалізувати свої ­напрацювання в монографії за часів хрущовської відлиги, ­Дудко був єдиним, хто заходився систематично вивчати 'Основу', піднісши планку дослідження цієї тематики на новий рівень.

'Основа' як перший всеукраїнський журнал літературної та суспільно-громадської проблематики стала етапним явищем на шляху творення модерної нації. Упродовж неповних двох років свого існування часопис був осердям українського громадського руху, єднаючи на своїх шпальтах (не раз у дискусіях, ба навіть у взаємозапереченнях) покоління кирило-методіївців і шістдесятників, різні суспільні верстви – від радикалів-різночинців до багатих поміщиків-імперців, людей різних національностей і віровизнань. Із Петербурґа, де виходила 'Основа', свободолюбні імпульси, підкріплені статусом імперської столиці, ширилися на всю Україну. Розрахована передовсім на освічену авдиторію, 'Основа' плекала нову національну еліту, яка причинилася до майбутніх зрушень у всіх ділянках ­духовного та суспільно-громадського буття України, що ­врешті породило самостійницьку парадигму політичного мислення.

Отож, зрозуміло, за Совєтського Союзу дослідження про 'Основу' усіляко гальмувалися, що призвело до величезної лакуни в розумінні нашого історичного минулого. Виникла скандальна (і, на жаль, для нашої науки типова) ситуація, коли першорядний чинник націєтворчих процесів було вивчено найменше. Проблема стала очевидною в добу Незалежности. З’являлися нові інтерпретаційні праці, де по-новому осмислювалося наше минуле, проте 'механіка' історичних процесів залишалася затуманена, позаяк нерозробленим залишався їх джерелознавчий складник.
