Reverse: Legend with date in centre: "GEORGE STEUART & Co. * CEYLON". Milled edge. This was in fact issued in 1881 after the older type tokens

Wekande Mills Ceylon (Sri Lanka) Bronze Token dated 1843.
GRADED PCGS MS62 BN
Obverse: Two native women at work with legend: "WEKANDE MILLS" with the same in both Sinhalese and Tamil (although incorrect).
Reverse: Legend with date in centre: "GEORGE STEUART & Co. * CEYLON".
Milled edge.
This was in fact issued in 1881 after the older type tokens had been withdrawn and had a value of 19 cents.
At this time the mills employed around 1,500
staff. It was designed by the manager of the mills, Charles Hendry.
