SPAIN - SPAIN (KINGDOM OF) - PHILIPPE IV

(1621-1665)

Philip IV of Spain (1605-1665) is the son of Philip III and Margaret of Austria.
He became king on the death of his father in 1621, the year he married Elizabeth
of France (1602-1644), daughter of Henri IV and Marie de Medici. He is the
brother of Anne of Austria, wife of Louis XIII, and the father of Marie-Thérèse,
wife of Louis XIV. The greater part of his reign will happen in the fight
against France. From 1635, Spain entered the Thirty Years' War. After the Peace
of Westphalia in 1648, the war continues between France and Spain and ends at
the Peace of the Pyrenees in 1659. France loses definitively Catalonia, but
acquires Roussillon and Cerdanya. Mazarin and Anne of Austria Spanish arrange
the marriage of Louis XIV with the Infanta Maria Theresa he married in
Saint-Jean-de-Luz in 1660. Widower, Philip IV marries Marie-Anne of Austria, the
sister of Leopold I born with a sick son, the future Charles II of Spain
(1665-1700), the origin of the War of Spanish Succession.

So, as other reviewers make clear, this is very similar to Pack Darling and The Beta. It’s much closer aligned with The Beta, in plot and maybe more like Pack Darling with characters. That being said, I don’t hate this…..but it wasn’t great either. It’s both books mentioned but just….less. Less angst, less emotion, less feeling. The plot feels very half fleshed out, and the “bad guy” feels underwhelming. I didn’t really feel any real emotions from and of the male leads, except maybe Oliver. The others fell sorta flat for me. And Mika makes herself out to be this big bad ass straight outta training and then we never see it from here again with the one fitting room incident as the exception. SPOILER: The whole, “Oh, I’m actually probably an Omega, but I don’t wanna be but I do actually wanna be but no one can ever know my secret that I do nothing to hide “ thing fell so flat. She never commutes to believing she was secretly an omega, but also mentions her “secret” a lot. It just felt so manufactured. I’m intrigued enough to read part 2 and see how the author closes everything out, but this is not one I’ll recommend or ever come back to.
