Sinostan: China's Inadvertent Empire

Based on more than a decade's writing, research, and travel, this book offers a rare glimpse into China's expanding economic, cultural, and political power in the Eurasian heartland. China's rise is changing the world. Much attention has been given to how China's geo-economic vision is playing out in the global economy, or how its technology is reshaping the planet, yet it is over its western borders, in Central Asia, that China's influence has been quietly expanding in a more pervasive way. It is here that you can find the first strand of Xi Jinping's grand Belt and Road Initiative, China's new Silk Road to the West. It is to the Eurasian heartland that we can look for an understanding of China's new foreign policy vision and its consequences. In Sinostan, two acclaimed foreign policy experts recount their travels across Central Asia to keep their finger on the pulse and tell the story of China's growing influence. They interview Chinese traders in latter day Silk Road bazaars; climb remote mountain passes threatened by construction; commiserate with Afghan archaeologists charged with saving centuries-old Buddhist ruins before they are swept away by mining projects; meet with eager young Central Asians learning Mandarin; and sit with officials in all five Central Asian capitals, bearing witness to a region increasingly transformed by Beijing's presence. Their stories and experiences illustrate how China's foreign policy initiative has expressed itself on the ground, and what it means for those living both within and beyond the boundaries of its 'inadvertent empire'.

'... an extensively researched telling of Beijings rising power in Central Asia, unvarnished by agenda or a desire to construct smooth grand narratives... the book lays out a convincing case for viewing China as a detached regional power. '... a detailed picture of how China is operating outside its borders.' - Mark Broatch, NZ Listener

'A sparkling, carefully observed account that offers an outstanding close-up view of a set of new worlds being formed out of sight of most commentators. 'A powerful book on a topic of huge importance.' - Rana Mitter, Professor of the History and Politics of Modern China, University of Oxford

'The book reads like an exhausting travelogue: taxis here, airport queues there, meetings with sources everywhere. What this first hand narrative approach does well is capture the swirling sense of intrigue and ambiguity that can envelop Central Asia.' - Christopher Ruane, Asian Affairs 54.2

Great Holder for the kitchen sink
Color: Black
The Sponge Holder is exactly as pictured. We use it to put our very sharp knives in so they are not in the sink when we go to fill the dishwasher.

Small caddy that makes a big difference
Color: Black
I don't have counter space to spare, so having a dedicated spot for my sponges, dish brush, and soap right at the sink has been really convenient. Everything is corralled and easy to grab. The angled design drains directly into the sink, which keeps things from getting gross and waterlogged. There's a separated sponge compartment which I like, and it's big enough to hold a couple of sponges, a long dish brush, and a small bottle of dish soap all at once. It also just looks way nicer than my previous solution of stuffing everything into a jar. It's sturdy, hasn't gotten rusty or tarnished, and it just feels well made. Sometimes a small organizational upgrade makes your whole kitchen feel better and this is one of those. Also, very reasonably priced! For $11, this is a goodie.

Works well, spacious
Color: Black, Color: Black
Quality: This holder is actually really nice. It feels sturdy and well made, not flimsy or cheap at all. The material has a solid feel to it, and it holds everything in place without tipping or sliding around. Size and Capacity: This thing is bigger than I expected in a good way. There is plenty of space for multiple sponges, scrubbers, and even a small bottle of dish soap without everything feeling crammed together. It also has a removable compartment specifically for longer dish brushes, which is really convenient. It keeps them upright and separate so they are not just laying across everything else. Use and Functionality: The functionality is great. It is very easy to use and keeps everything organized and in one spot instead of scattered around the sink. One of the best parts is the drainage. Any excess water drains right back into the sink, and I have not had any issues with water pooling at the bottom. That alone makes a big difference in keeping things cleaner and less messy. Overall, It looks good, feels good, and does exactly what it is supposed to do. Good quality, very functional, and worth the price. Definitely a solid kitchen sink organizer.
