Transmissions can fail for a variety of reasons, so if it's happened to you, you're not alone. 2017-2019 Ford Powerstrokes are getting miles on them now, and it's not uncommon for things to break. The 6R140 is a great transmission, some say one of the best Ford has made lately. But heat, increased power production, heavier workloads and the business of life can take its toll. SunCoast Category 2 transmissions give you the comfort of a factory-like ride, with upgrades to allow for a reliable and long living reliable drivetrain solution.

SunCoast's reputation is already highly regarded in the automotive community, for their dedication to a scientific approach to addressing deficiencies in modern transmissions. With years of research and development under their belts, they also amassed patents on products designed to keep you on the road, regardless of your driving style, or your truck's purpose.

The Ford 6R140

The new 6R140 from Ford is one of the more exciting drivetrains on the market today. The 6R140 was released to replace the previous Torqshift unit, which was the 5R110. The 5R110 was previously used in both the 6.0 and 6.4 Ford diesel engines. When Ford released the 6.7 L Powerstroke powerplant it also released the new much stronger 6R140 Torqshift transmission.

For maximum efficiency, the patented Lepelletier geartrain reduces complexities that exist in connecting an automatic transmission's gear sets and clutches. Simply put, the 6R140 uses a simple gearset to drive a Ravigneaux gearset, so the transmission uses just five clutch sets to achieve six forward gears. The 6R140 is further strengthened by the utilization of a powder-metal carrier within the compound Ravigneaux planetary gearset (a double planetary gearset). The carrier is made up of four pressed components, which are sinter-brazed together to form a rigid, dense structure.

The new torque converter in the 6R140 features an exclusive long travel, ultra-high-capacity turbine damper designed to soften the extreme force produced by the new 6.7 L Powerstroke. Here at SunCoast we have already improved upon this converter, launching our own line of Torque converters including a variety of stall speeds.

The Engineering

When SunCoast first looked at the 6R140, they saw similarities to the Ford 6R80 and GM 6L80/6L90 platforms. Previous experience pointed to the 4-5-6 clutch pack being the first thing that needs addressed. The 4-5-6 clutch pack or "E CLUTCH" is one of the smallest clutches in the transmission. SunCoast tested different friction materials and manufactures and a pattern developed. The higher the friction coefficient the more violent the shifts become, especially when adding additional torque. Often this creates the 3-4 "squawk" when shifting into 4th gear. Instead of settling for slippage prone materials to prevent failure, SunCoast got to work and developed a now patented solution to the problem.

The Patented Damper

The 6R140 E clutch hub is designed without a damper. This makes sense due to Ford designing the 6R140 transmission with the thought process that there would be torque management. With torque management in place, during testing, SunCoast noticed factory defueling during shifts essentially pulling power between shifts. Ford had also designed this with a certain torque limit in mind that most certainly did not have deletes, larger turbochargers, and aftermarket tuners involved. Paired with the removal of torque management, failure of the transmission is imminent.

SunCoast has designed a completely new 4-5-6 clutch hub that incorporates a damper assembly that also uses sound reduction/absorption technology that eliminates the dreaded 3-4 squawk and restores shift quality. This clutch hub damper allows for a clean, crisp, and silent gear exchange. This allows sophisticated friction materials with higher friction coefficients to be used, ensuring longevity and reliability. This PATENTED SunCoast E Clutch Hub Damper has been tested to over 1,000hp reliably. It is only available at SunCoast.

SunCoast has also developed a new 4-5-6 "E" clutch power pack using nine of their own custom frictions. This proprietary SunCoast clutch pack is exclusively designed for their patented clutch hub. The custom SunCoast set-up provides a clean and crisp shift. The extra capacity in the clutch pack along with the higher friction coefficient provides unmatched performance that can't be matched.

The Pump Bushing

The factory pump on the 6R140 often suffers a loss of lubrication pressure at the converter hub support pump bearing due to bearing seal failure. The bearing eventually fails and catastrophic failure follows. SunCoast includes a new bearing to restore normal operation and provide integrity for the pump.

Looks and feels great. Amazingly smooth, and well-crafted. It fits the length of my keyboard, and has quality grippers on the base to prevent sliding. Was actually really pleased with it.

High quality solid wood rest
Size: 14.4"L x 3.15"W x 0.78"H, Color: Black Walnut
This wrist rest is nicely finished and was well packed in high-density foam as well as a cardboard box that was wrapped very tightly in thick plastic. It's sanded very, very smooth and is made of beautiful solid walnut, with nonskid pads on the back. The branding is on the side that touches the keyboard, so it is not visible or obtrusive at all. My keyboard is 15.5 inches long, and the 14.4 inch rest looks great up against it. The 0.78" thickness is also very suitable for the thickness of my keyboard. The product gets 5 stars because it is accurately represented and this is entirely down to personal preference, but something about this rest that I don't love is the degree of incline. I have my keyboard up on the kickstands, and the wrist rest that I already owned slopes pretty dramatically starting from the middle, so it follows the angle of the keyboard. The ZQL wrist rest is about 75% flat and then has a small slope that rounds off on the bottom edge. Again, this is very much a personal thing; I just brought it up because it's something that people might not think too much about until they actually use it. I think this rest would be great for anyone with very large hands, or with a flat keyboard. It's taking a little getting used to for me, but I really enjoy the smoothness and obvious quality of the wood. A wrist rest is an ergonomic must when it comes to thicker keyboards.
