'stuffed with scholarly discoveries and photographic closeups, and you will learn about everything from Vermeer’s optical mastery to his moral symbolism' - The Times
Published to accompany the once-in-a-lifetime exhibition at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, this is the first major study on Vermeer's life and work for many years
The blockbuster show at the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, is the largest Vermeer exhibition ever held. Going beyond the twenty-eight masterpieces on display at the show, this important publication reproduces every one of the artist's known paintings, thirty-five in all, with a wide selection of contextual illustrations, commentaries and up-to-date research by the world's most distinguished Vermeer scholars.
The book was designed by Irma Boom, the 'Queen of Books', and printed on an uncoated 'Munken Print White' paper, specially commissioned to ensure the veracity of colours.
Vermeer's intensely quiet and enigmatic paintings invite the viewer into a private world, often prompting more questions than answers. Who is being portrayed - are his subjects real or imagined? What details do we know of Vermeer's personal life? How did it affect his painting style? Bringing together diverse strands of the artist's professional and private life in Delft in the 17th century, and corralling important research that has revealed new ways of looking at his paintings, this publication is required reading for lovers of the most admired of all Dutch 17th-century painters, one of the world's greatest artists.
One of the New York Times Art books of 2023.
