Claes schreef een commentaar waarin hij tientallen tot nu toe mysterieus gebleven passages voor het eerst verklaart. Bovendien onthult hij in een nawoord hoe Eliot het pijnlijkste geheim uit zijn privé-leven prijsgeeft in een ingenieus gecodeerde vorm. Zijn vriendin Mary Hutchinson sprak er wel over als 'Toms autobiografie'. Vijfentachtig jaar na het verschijnen van The Waste Land krijgt de lezer voor het eerst de sleutel tot de betekenis van dit legendarische gedicht.
