Op 1 juni begint – in theorie althans – de meteorologische zomer en dat is meteen ook een uitgelezen verschijningsdatum voor het nieuwe nummer van Motoren & Toerisme. Een nummer waarvoor we veel gereden hebben, in eigen land, op verplaatsing, op pers-introducties. Maar ook, én dat is nog belangrijker, in het gezelschap van onze lezers. Zo trokken we eind april met een aantal lezers naar het Westerwald voor een goede, oude lezersreis. Eerder al had een aantal onder jullie al kennis kunnen maken met de BMW R 18.

 Het verslag van deze lezersreis én lezerstes lees je in het juni-nummer van Motoren & Toerisme. Daarnaast veel testwerk, zo beleefden we op de nieuwe KTM 890 SMT, “de terugkeer van een topconcept” (dixit hoofdredacteur Tom). De eigenzinnige Oostenrijker is dan logischerwijs ook de coverster van ons juni-nummer.

Maar er viel tussen de plensbuien door nog veel meer fraais te ontdekken dit voorjaar. Zo lanceerde Fantic met de Caballero 700, z’n eerste ‘dikke’ viertaktmachine, trokken we op expeditie met een Husqvarna (Norden 901 Expedition), reden we met de Kymco AK Premium beproefden we  de nieuwe Yamaha Tracer GT en Niken GT. Tussen de bedrijven door zetten redacteurs en freelancers ook de nodige kilometers op onze Moto Morini X-Cape langeduur-testmotor.

Regen of geen regen getoerd werd er ook. Wereldreizigers Caroline en Tom namen afscheid van het Aziatische continent, Pieter Pacques vertelt het vervolg van z’n avonturen in de Balkan. Omdat je als Belgische motorrijder nooit genoeg Ardennen-routes achter de hand kan hebben, zette Patrick De Smet er nog een nieuwe voor ons uit en dat vanuit het zadel van de X-Cape. Twee vliegen in één klap dus.

Maar er is in deze zomerse Motoren & Toerisme ook ruimte voor reportages. Zo weten we nu waarom het Ambuce Rescue Team (ART) uit Wijnegem nu ook twee motorfietsen in dienst heeft én legt huistechneut Peter Aansorgh haarfijn uit wat een CAN-bus nu precies is. En neen, het is geen Antwerpse buslijn…

So, as other reviewers make clear, this is very similar to Pack Darling and The Beta. It’s much closer aligned with The Beta, in plot and maybe more like Pack Darling with characters. That being said, I don’t hate this…..but it wasn’t great either. It’s both books mentioned but just….less. Less angst, less emotion, less feeling. The plot feels very half fleshed out, and the “bad guy” feels underwhelming. I didn’t really feel any real emotions from and of the male leads, except maybe Oliver. The others fell sorta flat for me. And Mika makes herself out to be this big bad ass straight outta training and then we never see it from here again with the one fitting room incident as the exception. SPOILER: The whole, “Oh, I’m actually probably an Omega, but I don’t wanna be but I do actually wanna be but no one can ever know my secret that I do nothing to hide “ thing fell so flat. She never commutes to believing she was secretly an omega, but also mentions her “secret” a lot. It just felt so manufactured. I’m intrigued enough to read part 2 and see how the author closes everything out, but this is not one I’ll recommend or ever come back to.

I love this type of story. And omegaverse is one of my all time favorite genres. But there are a few things that pulled me out of my enjoyment while I was reading. It was repetitive at times as well as struggled with telling not showing. So we didn’t always feel like we were experiencing things with the main character. There were also some plot holes but they may still be answered in part 2. Now this isn’t to be said I didn’t enjoy parts of the story. I loved the almost instant love between Mila and Oliver.
