Met het verschijnen van hun titelloze debuutplaat gebeurt er iets dat The Miseries niet hadden verwacht. Dat wat begon na een lange nacht aan de bar lijkt vooralsnog via binnenlandse successen en Amerikaanse avonturen nog geen einde te kennen. The Miseries, garagepunkband en zijproject van Tim Knol, is nu al een groot succes. Terwijl dat toch helemaal niet de verwachting was toen de mannen katerig de studio indoken.

Het resultaat van die eerste opnames verscheen najaar 2013 op Tender Records, Tim Knol’s eigen vinyl label. De band kreeg de smaak te pakken en maakte op Oerol het podiumdebuut. “We willen niet te veel nadenken over een plan, gewoon goeie muziek maken en heel veel spelen,” zegt drummer Kees Schaper. Na met hun show op Into The Great Wide Open vriend en vijand te hebben verbaasd volgde er een clubtour en speelden The Miseries vijf shows op Eurosonic-Noorderslag. Niet zonder onverdeeld succes. De band zet voorzichtig stappen in het buitenland met als belangrijkste wapenfeit een trip naar Amerika waar de band in maart op SXSW zal spelen.

Ondertussen namen ze in de Hoornse MI5 Studios hun titelloze debuutplaat op. Twaalf nummers in dertig minuten. Een plaat die qua gevoel doet denken aan hun helden, of dat nou The Saints, Pavement, The Buzzcocks of The Ramones zijn. “We maken nummers zonder concessies en doen alleen wat we zelf willen. Het is daardoor een veelzijdige plaat, met sterke melodieën en energie als verbindende factor,” aldus Tim Knol, zanger en gitarist. Net als Knol’s solo-albums verschijnt de plaat op Excelsior Recordings.

Een uit de hand gelopen idee in de kroeg lijkt zo langzaam te verworden tot de droom van iedere muzikant: met drie vrienden goede muziek maken en dat over de hele wereld spelen. Waar het eindigt is de vraag, maar een ding is zeker: The Miseries zijn goed op weg.

As everyone has made clear, it holds credit cards very tight. Almost 3 weeks in & mine seems to be breaking in a little, but cards are still a bit difficult to remove. No complaints with money clip. One thing I thought was a dumb move on manufacturers part, was inside one of the card slots is a tag sewn into the seem. This makes things alot worse while trying to fit cards into all slots. I was able to get a scissors in there enough to cut most of the tag out, without cutting the stitching itself....it made a big difference....enough to fit an extra card in & without it bulging up the wallet overall. Why would they feel it necessary to do this is beyond my pay grade. Its not like you can even see what the tag says until you cut it out.... I believe it was the name & logo....but Jesus, how unnecessary, & in the dumbest place one could possibly think of. Especially when EVERYONE comments on how excessively tight it is to fit cards in the slots & also be able to retrieve them with relative ease when needed. Overall I am happy with this wallet so far.... I'll be interested to see if it holds together over the long haul or if the stitching gives out in a year & has to be replaced. I will update this review as time progresses. UPDATE: Its almost to March 27 2023 & its been holding up great. No ripping or tearing stitching holding strong. Still holds cards really tight, but they are easier to remove.
