String of Spades, also known as Ceropegia woodii Heartless, is a low-maintenance trailing succulent that combines botanical interest with ornamental beauty. This variety is admired for its unique spade-shaped foliage and elegant cascading habit, offering a fresh twist on the classic heart-leaf form. Its decorative appeal, low-maintenance nature, and suitability for hanging baskets make it a favorite among houseplant enthusiasts. The name highlights its distinctive leaf form while maintaining recognition within the popular String of Hearts family.

Native to Southern Africa, the String of Spades produces slender, trailing stems lined with small, spade-shaped leaves that display shades of green, silver, and sometimes subtle purple tones on the undersides.

The foliage often features delicate marbling, adding texture and visual interest.

It's fine, cascading growth makes it an excellent choice for hanging planters, shelves, and elevated containers.

The String of Spades plant is a compact yet vigorous trailing succulent, with vines that can reach 4 feet long under favorable conditions.

Individual leaves remain small, usually less than an inch in size, while the plant spreads gracefully rather than growing upright, creating a soft, draping effect. The String of Spades flowers are typically pale pink to mauve with darker accents and bloom during spring and summer.

These delicate blooms resemble tiny lanterns and appear sporadically along the stems. While not the primary attraction, the flowers add a subtle ornamental bonus and reflect the plant’s botanical charm.

As a unique variety of String of Hearts, it offers eye-catching foliage, graceful growth, and easy adaptability to indoor spaces. Its distinctive leaf shape, drought tolerance, and cascading habit make it an excellent choice for plant lovers seeking a rare yet approachable statement plant.

When and How to Water Your String of Spades

The String of Spades plant is a drought-tolerant plant that stores water in its tuberous roots and fleshy leaves, allowing it to thrive even when watering is occasionally missed. Overwatering is the most common cause of failure, so allowing the soil to dry fully between waterings is essential. The String of Spades needs infrequent watering, with more moisture during the growing season (March–September), once every 7-14 days, and minimal watering specialized succulent potting soil about every 3-4 weeks during dormancy (October–February).

In spring and summer, during the growing season, water every 7–14 days, using enough water to thoroughly moisten the soil while ensuring excess drains out completely. In warm months, the plant grows actively and benefits from slightly more frequent watering, especially in bright light or warmer indoor environments. However, the soil should always dry out between watering cycles to prevent root rot.

In fall and winter, during the dormant season, water every 3–4 weeks using a light but thorough soak, only after the soil is completely dry. Growth slows significantly in cooler months, and excess moisture can easily lead to rot. Reducing watering during dormancy helps maintain healthy roots and prevents stress on the plant.

Light Requirements – Where to Place Your String of Spades Plant

When growing indoors, place the plant near an east- or south-facing window where it receives 4–6 hours of bright, indirect light per day.

Adequate light ensures compact growth, strong color, and healthy trailing stems. Too little light can cause leggy growth and faded leaf color, while direct midday sun may scorch the foliage.

Supplemental grow lights can help in low-light homes. When growing outdoors, provide bright shade or gentle morning sun for 4–5 hours daily, avoiding harsh afternoon sunlight.

In outdoor conditions, filtered sun under a pergola or tree canopy is ideal, helping maintain vibrant foliage without sunburn.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

String of Spades requires a well-drained, airy soil and light NPK fertilization once a year in spring during active growth to maintain healthy roots and steady development. Poor drainage is one of the main causes of root rot, so soil composition plays a critical role in long-term health.

Planet Desert specializes in succulents and has , that includes an organic substrate with mycorrhizae to help with the growth of a healthy root system, to help your succulents thrive.

Use NPK fertilizer in a 5-10-5 ratio once a year in the spring, and refrain from feeding in the fall and winter. Overfertilizing can cause weak, stretched growth, so a light feeding approach is best.

Hardiness Zone & More

In the United States, this is mostly an indoor plant, but if you live in southern Florida or Hawaii, then you can cultivate it outdoors in USDA zones 10-11.

It prefers warm climates with good air circulation and protection from frost.

Outdoors, maintain temperatures above 50°F and avoid prolonged exposure to cold or heavy rain.

Moderate humidity is beneficial, but excessive moisture should be avoided. Bright shade or partial sun works best, especially in hot regions.

Indoor Growing String of Spades Requirements

The trailing String of Spades Plant grows well indoors when provided with bright indirect light, warm temperatures, and good airflow. Ideal indoor temperatures range between 65–80°F, and the plant benefits from occasional rotation to ensure even growth. Keep it away from cold drafts, heaters, or overly humid areas.

According to the ASPCA, Ceropegia woodii is considered non-toxic to cats, dogs, and horses, making it a safer choice for pet-friendly homes. However, ingestion of large amounts of plant material may still cause mild digestive upset.

How to Propagate Your String of Spades Plant

String of Spades is easy to propagate using stem cuttings, tubers, or layering methods, making it ideal for sharing or expanding collections. Stem cuttings should be taken during spring or summer, allowed to callus for 24 hours, and then placed in moist, well-draining soil. Keep cuttings in bright indirect light and lightly moist conditions until roots develop.

Another effective method is layering, where trailing stems are pinned onto the soil while still attached to the mother plant. Once roots form, the new plant can be separated and grown independently.

Most complete coverage of Guadalcanal I have read.
Format: Kindle
I have read dozens of WWII books and many touched on the Guadalcanal Battle. I thoroughly enjoyed The Big E and its involvement in the battle. Thas book covered the entire conflict from start to finish. Frankly, I hated to see the book end. The courage and tenacity of all those involved was amazing. To understand the miserable conditions in the area where these men fought was inspiring. To see this battle through the eyes of the American forces and Japanese forces was an added bonus. Thank you for a great read!!!

Shines a light on the reality of the War in the Pacific
Format: Audiobook
Well-written and it really laid out all of the details of how this battle unfolded. I listed to the audio-book, and it was helpful to have the PDF to see a map. How the soldiers on each side endured the battles in the Pacific Theater is beyond me. Man's inhumanity to man that result in this battle outlined here is depressing, but also the sacrifice of those called on to endure and suffer through that inhumanity is equally inspiring and humbling to those whose lives are so comfortable in comparison.

Good book
Format: Hardcover
If Ww2 interest u at all then u want to read this book. I have read the other books on this subject ( so why read another one?) well what i luv about this book is that because so much time has passed that most all of the people in this book are gone & so much more info has been released about these battles, that the combatants ( especially the higher officers are written about as if they are human (mistakes & warts & all) & not like they were all Bull Halsey type Gods which they were certainly not as in most all the books released within the 1st 30 yrs of the war. This makes for a much different & more interesting story about these battles than even the original books on the subject. You come to understand the where & whyfores better, by knowing the real true strenghts & weakness's & fears that drove these men. Hey they are all the bravest of heroes to me. But the were not perfect, & because of this, mistakes were made, that were really not acknowledged or maybe not even known about in early books on WW2

Great structure
Format: Paperback
I had to get the book for class, so did not exactly get it because I “wanted to.” It was a good read though. I liked the structure of each section. Everything simple enough to understand while also diving a bit deeper.

A must have for every intelligence professional - collector or analyst!
Format: Paperback
An excellent resource for any intelligence collector or analyst. The chapters are written by world-class experts in each discipline with an excellent final chapter on collection management written by Drs. Lowenthal and Clark. Each chapter defines the elements of the particular intelligence discipline, its history and producers, as well as how the INT is managed and explores likely future trends. An extensively researched and documented text that is nonetheless an approachable resource that would make an excellent addition to any intelligence related syllabus.
