Six Questions Your Ben & Jerry's Franchise Financial Model Must Answer

We built this franchise unit financial model using our own research into the premium dessert sector to ensure every assumption is grounded in reality. The model comes pre-populated with editable data for scoop sales, catering events, and royalties, reflecting a Year 1 revenue target of $805,000. It serves as a comprehensive franchise investment calculator that you can adapt to your specific location and local labor market.

Profitability Timeline

The unit reaches operational breakeven quickly in April 2026, just four months after launch, but bottom-line EBITDA fluctuates significantly in the early years. To analyze profitability for a new franchise location, you must look past the $82,000 Year 1 EBITDA and prepare for tighter margins as staffing scales up in Year 2. Profitability stabilizes by Year 5 with an expected EBITDA of $110,000 as catering revenue grows to $202,500.

Improve Unit Margins

  • Scale catering to $200k+
  • Reduce ice cream waste
  • Optimize crew member scheduling
[dynamic_pic9]

Capital Requirements

You will need approximately $434,500 in total capital to cover the initial franchise fee and physical build-out of the shop. This franchise investment feasibility study template shows that the bulk of your funds go toward leasehold improvements and essential refrigeration equipment. Here is the quick math: you need a solid cash reserve because the model shows a minimum cash point of $630,000 later in the cycle.

Top Investment Uses

  • Leasehold Improvements: $200,000
  • Display Cases/Freezers: $80,000
  • Initial Franchise Fee: $39,500
[dynamic_pic10]

Investment Returns

The franchise ROI for this specific model shows a long-term play, with a payback period extending beyond the initial five-year window. With an IRR of -1.91% and a Year 5 net margin of roughly 8.3%, this is a lifestyle business or a strategic territory play rather than a rapid cash-out. What this estimate hides is the potential resale value of the unit once revenue crosses the $1.3M mark in Year 5.

Key Investor Metrics

  • Internal Rate of Return: -1.91%
  • Payback Period: 5+ Years
  • Year 5 Revenue: $1,323,000
[dynamic_pic11]

Break-Even Point

Using this small business financial projection excel template, we see the unit hits its break-even date in April 2026. The primary driver for reaching this point is the $12,000 monthly rent and the high labor cost for a fully staffed shop. To stay above water, you need to maintain high throughput and leverage the $350,000 in base scoop sales during the first year of operation.

Reach Breakeven Faster

  • Secure high-pedestrian site
  • Aggressive pre-opening marketing
  • Control initial inventory waste
[dynamic_pic12]

Cash Runway

The retail store monthly cash flow projection spreadsheet indicates the lowest cash point occurs in December 2029 at $630,000. While the unit is operational, the timing of capital reinvestment and staffing increases means you need a healthy buffer to survive seasonal dips. Still, the cash flow remains positive enough to avoid additional debt if you manage your $14,400 annual insurance costs and utilities tightly.

Protect Monthly Cash

  • Phase equipment upgrades
  • Manage seasonal inventory
  • Negotiate utility deposits
[dynamic_pic13]

Scenario Outcomes

Applying best practices for franchise unit financial forecasting means looking at how a 10% revenue drop or a spike in COGS impacts your $82,000 Year 1 EBITDA. In a high-growth scenario where catering hits its targets early, the year-5 margin can expand significantly beyond the base 8.3%. However, if labor costs for your 8.5 FTE crew members rise faster than prices, your peak cash need will increase defintely.

Hit the High Case

  • Maximize 'Scoop of Month'
  • Upsell shakes and sundaes
  • Drive high-margin merchandise

Became my dog's new favorite
Color: Blue
This instantly became my dog's go-to toy, and thankfully it's lasted longer than I anticipated. He was excited to play with it immediately, of course, but he also continued to go to it over all the other toys he has. He loves to rip and tear, so I didn't think this would last more than a day, but incredibly it's been going for weeks. Granted, he's torn out the squeaker and some of the crinkly plastic, as well as most of the stuffing, but there's still a recognizable dinosaur-shaped toy hanging around that he still likes to play with. The squeaker is also different than most dog toys, it's larger and lower-pitched, so that variation is fun. There's lots of crinkly plastic in the tail and feet, so even after my dog ripped open the tail and gotten that plastic out, there's still more noise-making stuff left in there. The size and amount of stuffing is also great, as it's given him many days of things to tear apart.

My Dogs Love It!
Color: Blue, Color: Blue
Do your dogs love a specific type of toy? Since my girls were puppies, they have preferred a specific material for toys. It is a soft, bubbly texture, usually in bright colors. It is soft for them and durable enough to survive even the toughest of playmates. All the toys made from this material also have a certain crinkle paper that drives both of my girls wild, and sometimes even include a squeaker. When I saw that this adorable dinosaur fit their favorite toy's qualities, I knew I had to get it for them! First, I want to talk about the quality. This dinosaur is adorable and designed for some tough play sessions. It is more reinforced than the name-brand toys I buy, which impressed me. While my girls rarely destroy toys, I find comfort in knowing that they will likely get bored with a toy before destroying it. What shocked me more was the squeaker. This company didn't go cheap; they went for a higher quality, large squeaker that is very loud and durable. My dogs have been playing with this for nearly two hours straight, and the squeaker has been going strong. If you don't like loud squeakers, though, be warned, it is very loud and isn't stop working anytime soon! Overall, this toy has been a big hit and way cheaper than what I can buy at local pet stores. With the quality and how much my girls love it, it has been a bargain and well worth it! This is a toy that we will be purchasing more of soon.

Rawr!
Color: Blue, Color: Blue
My dogs love this toy; they have been playing with it for a few days, and surprisingly, it has been durable enough to withstand most of the torture. it has a fun squeaker and thankfully not too much filler, which I am thankful to have to follow behind to pick up. This is a good value toy. My dogs can usually tear a toy up in seconds but for some reason, they have chosen to keep this dinosaur alive!

Not for Aggressive Chewers
Color: Blue, Color: Blue
Cute stuffed dino with one large squeaker in the body and crinkle paper in the feet and tail. The right size for medium to large dogs. Riley was eager to play tug-of-war with this toy when I first gave it to her. Five minutes later the novelty had worn off and she went to her toy basket to bring out her usual favorites. Being plush, this is not really a toy for aggressive chewers--after only 5 minutes she had torn open a seam and ripped off part of the tag. I'll continue to let her play with it until stuffing starts coming out (which shouldn't be long).

Great Value Toy
Color: Crinkle Duck (Blue), Size: Large, Color: Crinkle Duck (Blue), Size: Large
This toy has been one of my dog’s absolute favorites. He gets excited every time he sees it and will carry it around the house, toss it in the air, and keep himself entertained for a long time. The shape and texture seem perfect for him, and it quickly became one of his go-to toys over everything else in his basket. What I really like is that it holds up reasonably well for the price. It’s definitely not indestructible, and after a lot of play, it will sometimes start to rip—usually around the feet first since that’s where my dog tends to grab and chew the most. But honestly, considering how affordable it is, I don’t mind replacing it when needed. It’s inexpensive enough that rebuying feels worth it because he genuinely loves it that much. I’d rather keep buying a toy he is obsessed with than spend more on something that just sits untouched. It’s fun, cute, and keeps him happy, which is what matters most. Overall, I’d definitely recommend it for dogs who love plush toys and playful chewing.
